Introducing IndaChlor®, a sustainable solution for chlorinated waste in Dunkirk

Indaver intends to build IndaChlor®, a new treatment plant in Dunkirk, where chlorinated and production waste will be recycled.

This 40 million euro investment with a capacity of 40,000 tonnes will be built in the industrial area of the port in Dunkirk. IndaChlor® will be operational by the end of 2018 and will result in the creation of around twenty direct jobs.

IndaChlor®, a circular and ecological economy becomes reality.

IndaChlor® is a new development in Indaver’s endeavors to recover as many re-usable materials and as much energy as possible from waste. The IndaChlor® treatment centre, based in the Port of Dunkirk, will recycle production waste and chlorinated waste streams. At this treatment plant, Indaver will recover chlorine in the form of hydrochloric acid and recycle the energy produced. Hydrochloric acid is a product mainly used by the chemical, petrochemical, metallurgical, and food-processing industries. With the IndaChlor® facility, Indaver is developing a sustainable solution for the Dunkirk region in order to implement a safe and environmentally responsible circular economy. 

Industrial symbiosis in Dunkirk

The development of the IndaChlor® facility will also contribute to industrial symbiosis in the Port of Dunkirk. IndaChlor® will be able to work with other industries in the area – take Ecophos, a near neighbour for example. Ecophos manufactures food phosphates, and uses hydrochloric acid in its production processes. Indaver will be able to supply hydrochloric acid directly to Ecophos via a pipe network. In addition, the steam-energy produced during IndaChlor®'s treatment process will be recycled. The new plant will supply steam to another neighbouring company, also via a pipeline. In short, IndaChlor® will not only provide a recycling facility of a complex waste stream, but it will also support two neighbouring manufacturing companies, thus strengthening both the North-Pas de Calais region and the Port of Dunkirk and its industrial zone. 

Sustainable transport

In addition to the benefits already enumerated, the site in Dunkirk is ideal for receiving waste from nearby regions such as The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Ireland, and England. As important are Dunkirk’s good transport links, such as rail access, and close proximity to the sea and the A16 motorway.

Extracting valuable materials from industrial waste

Indaver continues to research and develop innovative methods for extracting even more energy and materials from waste. With IndaChlor®, these ambitions are becoming a reality in Dunkirk. Indaver has considerable experience in the circular economy and the recovery of hydrochloric acid (HCI). Since 2001, Indaver has been managing a hydrochloric acid recovery plant at Tata Steel in IJmuiden (the Netherlands) where 165 000 t of HCI (ARP) waste is treated and of which 99.9% is recovered and re-used by Tata Steel.
