Rotary kilns in Germany: safe and sustainable treatment of hazardous waste

The rotary kilns in Biebesheim and Hamburg provide thermal treatment for industrial and hazardous waste that is not eligible for recycling.

Hamburg

Hazardous waste is disposed in an environmentally sound manner at the Hamburg high-temperature incineration plant.

The plant is divided into two identical lines that are operated independently of each other and have their own flue gas cleaning systems. This splitting ensures that the facility can be operated cost-effectively and safely at all times.

The waste heat generated by the incineration of the waste flows into Hamburg's district heating network. The energy generated is used to operate the site. This measure not only helps to reduce operating costs, but also to conserve natural resources.

Biebesheim

In the Biebesheim hazardous waste incineration plant, which consists of two identical incineration units that operate independently of each other, around 120,000 tonnes of hazardous waste are disposed every year. All types of solid, liquid and pasty waste are accepted, as well as waste in containers that is generated in industry and public authorities.

The delivered materials are incinerated at high temperatures in powerful rotary kilns. A flue gas cleaning system filters and scrubs the resulting combustion gases in several stages, thus reducing emissions to a minimum.
